If you are staring
at a giant sized golf ball, you are not lost in the movie set of Honey I
Shrunk the Kids. You are at Epcot, one of Disney World's exciting theme
parks in Orlando, Florida. This park is not as frequently visited as the
Magic Kingdom, but it is larger in size. Most people don't realize that, but
once you visit Epcot, you will see how that can be.
There are two main sections of Epcot- Future World and World Showcase. As
you may guess, Future World focuses on all things futuristic, especially on
technology. I have witnessed this futuristic focus first hand. You will be
privy to the inventions of tomorrow. They even often have prototypes of the
tools of the future that you can see being used. As I said, I have witnessed
this phenomenon first-hand. One year I was at Epcot learning about a device
that seemed so impossible that it was just silly. But sure enough as the
years passed, that item became a highly sought after piece of technology. I
have never forgotten that. It's rare to be allowed to glimpse technology
that is not only cutting edge, but pre cutting edge. It's pretty cool.
That's one great thing about Epcot. You can learn a lot there. Of course,
Disney makes it fun and entertaining at the same time. Call it edutainment.
Inside the "giant golf ball"(actually called a geosphere) is Spaceship
Earth. This attraction takes you on a journey back in time and continues
until you are seeing yourself in the future. Everyone has dreamed of taking
a ride in a time machine. This is pretty close to getting to do that. The
ride has interactive elements that allow you to enter personal information
such as how you would want to live and work in the future. Then at the end,
a camera will be used to take your photo and place it into scenes where you
can "see yourself" in the future.
The second part of Epcot is the World Showcase. This is almost an entirely
separate park from Future World. Here you can walk through 11 nations of the
world, from Germany to China and Morocco to Canada. One of the best things
about visiting each of these "countries" is tasting all of the authentic
cuisine from each. Many people visit Epcot just to have lunch or dinner in
one of the "countries." I have done it several times.
There is a lot more to experience in the World Showcase than just food,
although it's reason enough for many. You can also ride some very creative
rides, each in the theme of the "country" you are in. For example, in
Norway, you will want to take a ride on Maelstrom. This is a family friendly
ride through a Norwegian fjord- picture a raging rapid with twists and
turns. It is not an extremely fast ride, but does have some unexpected
spots.
Mexico also has a great ride. The Gran Fiesta Tour is a boat ride that winds
through famous sites of Mexico and ends up passing through one of my
favorite restaurants in Epcot, the San Angel Inn. The ambiance of the
candlelit dining room is a perfect place to relax after all that walking.
And you will walk a lot. Remember, Epcot is twice as large as the Magic
Kingdom!
Two totally different sides of Epcot, Future World and World Showcase. Both
add up to a fun-filled, yet educational day at the park.
